Katal was honored to sponsor yesterday’s 2018 Butch Lewis Community Conversation Events featuring Shirley Sherrod, a lifelong civil rights activist and former Georgia State Director of Rural Development for the United States Department of Agriculture. She was forced to resign in 2010 after Breitbart News publicized selections of a recorded speech she had given at a NAACP event, edited to portray her as racist. At yesterday’s community conversation events, she discussed her experience growing up in the Jim Crow south, her involvement with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the murder of her father by a neighboring white farmer.
