Katal's Sean Hill on NYSBA Bail Reform Panel

Katal's Senior Legal Fellow, Sean Hill, participated in a panel discussion on bail reform this week during the New York State Bar Association’s annual meeting. Panelists discussed the current bail system in New York and the potential implications of the bail reform proposal put forth by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Sean emphasized that the success of bail reform should be evaluated by how well it would eliminate both wealth and race-based disparities, and reduce reliance on pretrial detention. This is the lens through which the policy team at Katal produced an analysis of the governor's proposals for pretrial justice reform, including bail, speedy trial and discovery reform. If you'd like to receive a copy of the analysis, please email Sean Hill at shill@katalcenter.org.

Katal on Both Sides of the Bars

The Fortune Society invited Katal's Community Organizer, Valdez Heron and Sean Hill to speak with Khalil Cumberbatch on Both Sides of the Bars to discuss why bail reform is needed in New York now. The three discussed Governor Cuomo's bail reform proposal and what's needed to ensure that reform ends wealth-based detention and dramatically reduces New York’s jail population across the state.

The full episode will air on February 11. In the meantime, you can check out this clip.
