Sign the petition demanding New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision #FreeCurtisBell
We're working with Curtis's family and lawyer, and will deliver these signatures to parole as a part of the effort to #FreeCurtisBell.
Curtis Bell is a community leader and member of Katal. For the last year, he's worked to close Rikers Island and pass the #LessIsMoreNY legislation to fix broken parole practices in New York. The issue is personal for Curtis as he is on parole.
On Wednesday, September 25th, state parole took Curtis into custody, alleging a technical violation of his parole. Technical violations are non-criminal offenses, like missing a meeting or changing address without providing notification to parole officials. Now Curtis is detained in jail in Suffolk County. We believe he is being targeted for his role as a community leader.
If the #LessIsMoreNY bill had passed, Curtis — and thousands of other New Yorkers — would be free instead of being detained in a cage right now.
We the undersigned are calling on NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to release Curtis Bell and stop using reincarceration to address non-criminal, technical violations of parole.
And we call on the New York State Legislature to pass Less Is More: Community Supervision Revocation Reform Act (S.1343B - Benjamin/ A.5493A - Mosley) to prevent this from happening to anyone else.
